Match of the Debacle

Match of the Debacle

Downing Street has been trying to make Gordon Brown more loveable and cuddly over recent weeks.  His appearance on the Piers Morgan show was such an example and Labour media people are continuing to make the Prime Minister appear more like a normal human being.

It turns out that one of their recent attempts to make Brown look like the common man was to have the PM appear on the BBC2 football programme Match of the Day 2.

Brown was slated to appear on the show alongside Adrian Chiles to talk about England’s World Cup bid.  Presumably, Downing Street thought that putting Brown alongside another cuddly, humourless individual who rarely knows what he is doing would paint the PM in a better light.

However, the BBC decided that the appearance – reportedly scheduled for late 2009 – would breach its impartiality guidelines so close to a General Election.

Rather than prohibit Brown from appearing on the show, surely it would make much more sense to allow Brown and his fellow political leaders to sit alongside Lee Dixon on the MOTD sofa?  Brown’s a lifelong Raith Rovers fan and I reckon Nick Clegg could make a decent stab at explaining the offside law.

Where the show would attract record viewing figures, however, would be for David Cameron’s view on the day’s Premier League matches.  I don’t imagine they played much football at Eton or that Dave has ever fancied eating a boiling hot meat and potato pie on the terraces.

I can see it now.   "They took the ball off him?  The rotters!"
